Escape the crowds and discover one of Norway’s most beautiful coastal destinations. Just a short drive from Halden, the Hvaler archipelago offers smooth granite shores, charming harbours, scenic hiking trails and relaxed island life. This itinerary is perfect for a long weekend and gives you a taste of the Norwegian summer without spending hours behind the wheel.

Day 1: Halden to Hvaler

Pick up your campervan in Halden and head towards the beautiful Hvaler archipelago.

Spend the afternoon exploring the islands, stopping at beaches, viewpoints and small harbours along the way. As you cross the bridges connecting the islands, you’ll quickly understand why Hvaler is one of Norway’s most beloved summer destinations.

Find a peaceful place to spend the evening and enjoy your first sunset by the sea.

Day 2: Explore Skjærhalden and the Islands

Spend the day exploring Skjærhalden, the heart of Hvaler and the perfect base for discovering the islands.

Start your morning with a walk around the harbour before visiting the Visitor Centre for Ytre Hvaler National Park in the historic Kornmagasinet. Here you’ll learn about Norway’s first marine national park and the unique wildlife both above and below the sea. During summer, the outdoor aquarium in the harbour is especially popular with visitors.

Afterwards, head to Storesand, often considered one of the finest beaches in the Oslo Fjord. Here you’ll find a beautiful sandy beach, swimming areas, barbecue spots, beach volleyball courts, a kiosk and a beach café overlooking the water. It’s an ideal place to spend a lazy summer afternoon, enjoy a swim or simply take in the relaxed island atmosphere that makes Hvaler so special.

If you want to experience more of the archipelago, take the local ferry from Skjærhalden and go island hopping to Herføl, Lauer or one of the other outer islands. The ferry network makes it easy to explore parts of Hvaler that many visitors never see.

For lunch or dinner, consider stopping by:

  • Big Fish Cafe for seafood and waterfront dining.
  • Vertshuset Skjærhalden for a relaxed meal in the heart of Skjærhalden. During the summer season, you may also find live music, quizzes and other events that add to the lively atmosphere.
  • Restaurant Edholmen for a memorable dinner overlooking the water. Restaurant, pool club and bar. (Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday)

Day 3: Explore Fredrikstad’s Historic Old Town

On your way back to Halden, stop in Gamlebyen Fredrikstad, Northern Europe’s best-preserved fortified town.

Walk through the cobblestone streets, browse small galleries, local shops and cafés, and explore the historic fortress walls that have protected the city for centuries. The atmosphere here is very different from modern Norway and feels like stepping back in time.

Saturdays and Sundays you can experience the popular flea market in the Old Town.
Here you can browse antiques, vintage treasures, glassware, furniture, books and all kinds of unexpected finds.
Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, wandering through the market and soaking up the friendly, relaxed atmosphere is an experience in itself.

Please note that the market is weather dependent and may be cancelled during heavy rain.
