Day 2: Strömstad and the Koster Islands

Cross the border into Sweden and drive towards Strömstad.

Before continuing to the harbour, many Norwegians make a stop at Nordby Shoppingcenter, one of Scandinavia’s most famous border shopping destinations. Whether you’re stocking up on groceries for your campervan, grabbing snacks for the ferry or simply curious about the uniquely Scandinavian phenomenon of cross-border shopping, Nordby is worth a quick visit.
Pro Tip: Tobacco, alcohol, dairy products, soft drinks and candy are often available at much lower prices than in Norway, making Nordby Shoppingcenter a popular stop before heading out on a road trip.

After your stop, continue to Strömstad and board the ferry to the beautiful Koster Islands. The islands are known for their peaceful atmosphere, beautiful nature and car-free roads. Rent a bike, discover hidden beaches or enjoy a seafood lunch overlooking the sea.

The Koster Islands are car-free. Leave your campervan in Strömstad and take the passenger ferry across.
Pro tip: The last ferry back to Strömstad usually departs late in the evening during summer, but schedules vary throughout the year. Check the official timetable before your trip.

Take one of the evening ferries back to Strömstad. Pick up some fresh seafood for dinner, find a peaceful campsite near the coast and enjoy a slow Scandinavian summer evening in your campervan.
