Happy 2 is a Toyota Proace (2018) with a reliable 2.0l diesel engine, easy to drive and perfect for discovering both city streets and quiet nature spots.

High-pitched noise while driving?

If you hear a high-pitched whistling sound at motorway speeds, don’t worry! It’s simply the wind flowing around the roof rails.
This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

driving (legal) in norway

  • Alcohol limit: 0.2‰
  • Handheld mobile phone use while driving is illegal
  • Always follow posted speed limits (we will NOT pay for your fines!)
  • Keep the headlights set to AUTO. In Norway, headlights must be on at all times while driving.

Road tolls in Norway (autopass)

  • Norway has automatic toll stations – no stopping.
  • The van has a registration device on the front windshield.
  • Some ferries also uses the registration device for payment. (The device is called “Autopass”)
  • Costs of the tolls will be summarized after the trip and deducted from the security deposit. (or invoiced if needed)

parking

Finding parking in Norway is usually easy, but always check the local parking signs before leaving the vehicle.

Please note:

  • Parking fees are the renter’s responsibility.
  • Some parking areas require payment through an app or parking meter.
  • Happy 2 is approximately 2.00 m high, so always check the height limit before entering parking garages.

Tip: Parking apps commonly used in Norway include EasyPark, ParkLink and APCOA Flow.

the electricity

The electrical system is designed to give you power while travelling and camping without needing external electricity every day.

Leisure battery

All the electricity are installed on the left side, under the bed floor.
Happy 2 is equipped with a 100 Ah leisure battery, a DC/DC charger and a 2000w inverter.

The leisure battery powers:

  • Refrigerator box
  • Interior lights
  • Charging ports and sockets

The battery charges automatically while you drive, and will normally be fully recharged in aprox. 3 hours of driving.

Shore power

If you stay at a campsite with electricity, you can connect the camper to mains power using the charger and extention cord under the left side of the bed.

Refrigerator

The refrigerator runs from the leisure battery, and will be the device that needs the most power from the leisure battery.

For best performance:

  • Keep the lid closed as much as possible.
  • Pre-cool drinks and food before loading them.

Power outlets in the van

Happy 2 is equipped with 230V power outlets powered by an inverter.

Please note that high-power appliances (such as hair dryers, kettles, coffee machines and electric heaters) consume a lot of electricity and will drain the leisure battery quickly.

If the leisure battery becomes low while the inverter is switched on, you will hear a high-pitched warning alarm. This is normal and means the battery is nearly empty.
The inverter will automatically switch off shortly afterwards to protect the battery.

To preserve battery power, use the 230V outlets only when needed. (Use the on- and off-switch on the wall)

If you hear the alarm:

  • Turn off the inverter.
  • Continue driving to recharge the battery, or connect the camper to shore power.
  • Avoid using the 230V outlets until the battery has been recharged.

The battery is automatically recharged while driving. If you’re staying in one place for several days, you can also recharge it by connecting the camper to mains power using the supplied charging cable.

💡 Tip: Use the USB ports or 12V outlets whenever possible. They consume much less power than the 230V outlets and help the battery last much longer.

Good to know

The leisure battery is separate from the starter battery, so using the lights or refrigerator box will not prevent the engine from starting.

kitchen & cooking

The kitchen includes:

  • Gas cooker
  • Gas grill
  • Frying pan & cooking pot
  • Plates, bowls, cups and glasses
  • Cutlery and kitchen utensils
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Moka coffee pot
  • Dish soap, sponge and dish towel
  • Salt, pepper and cooking oil

Gas canisters

The camper comes with a couple of gas canister to start with.
If you need more during your trip, compatible canisters are available at Biltema, Jula, many sporting goods stores and even some grocery stores.

Gas cooker

Both the gas cooker and the gas grill runs on gas.
How to use:

  1. Place the gas canister inside the cooker
  2. Lock it in
  3. Use the switch to ignite and control the flames.

Wind shield
You’ll find an orange storage box in the van containing foldable windshields for the gas cooker. Place them around the cooker when cooking outdoors to protect the flame from the wind and improve cooking efficiency.

Cooking inside the van?

Be extremely careful!

  • Make sure to have a steady surface under the cooker, and the area as clutter-free as possible.
  • Please make sure there is good ventilation while cooking.
  • Never leave the gas stove unattended and MOVE SLOW.

After cooking

Make sure the gas is turned off and disconnected from the cooker or grill.

water

Fresh water

Happy 2 includes a 10-litre fresh water container for drinking, cooking and washing dishes.

The container is filled before pick-up. You can refill it at campsites, service stations or other locations with clean drinking water.

Norway has some of the cleanest drinking water in the world. Even tap water is of excellent quality and perfectly safe to drink, so there’s no need to buy bottled water.

Mountain streams

In many remote mountain areas, fresh running water from streams is safe to drink.
However, avoid still water, water near farms, cabins or grazing animals. If you’re unsure, choose tap water or boil/filter the water first.

Shower

The camper includes a simple camping shower.

For the best experience, fill the shower bag with water and leave it in the sun for a few hours before use.

camping tips

Wild camping (Freedom to roam)

Wild camping is allowed in Norway under the Right to Roam (Allemannsretten).

Please follow these simple rules:

  • Stay at least 150 metres (500 ft) away from the nearest house or cabin.
  • You may stay for up to two nights in the same place on uncultivated land.
  • Respect nature and other people.
  • Leave the place exactly as you found it.

Campfires

Open fires are generally prohibited between 15 April and 15 September.
Use designated fire pits whenever possible, and always make sure the fire is completely extinguished.

Leave no trace

Help keep Norway beautiful:

  • Take all rubbish with you.
  • Use public bins or campsite facilities.
  • Never leave toilet paper or food waste in nature.

Weather

Norwegian weather can change quickly, even during summer.
Always bring an extra warm layer (wool) and a waterproof jacket before heading into the mountains.

Wildlife

You may encounter sheep, deer, moose or other wildlife on the road.

Slow down and drive carefully, especially at dawn and night and on rural roads.

shopping & supplies

Grocery stores

For everyday groceries we recommend:

  • Rema 1000, Kiwi, Coop Extra – affordable and found in most towns.
  • Meny, Coop Mega – larger selection, including international products.

Opening hours

Most supermarkets are open 07:00–23:00 Monday–Saturday.

Most are closed on Sundays, except smaller convenience stores, petrol stations and some tourist destinations.

Camping & outdoor equipment

If you need camping equipment during your trip, these stores can be found throughout Norway:

  • Biltema – camping gear, tools, car accessories and gas canisters.
  • Jula – outdoor equipment, tools and camping supplies.
  • Clas Ohlson – electronics, chargers, adapters and practical travel items.
  • XXL / Intersport – outdoor clothing, hiking gear and sleeping bags.

💡 Tip: Search for the store name in Google Maps – you’ll find them in most larger towns.

Cleaning & return

  • Please return the van as clean and tidy as possible. (There are some cleaning supplies in the van)
  • Remove all trash and personal belongings
  • Fill it up with diesel
  • Let me know if anything breaks or malfunctions – accidents happen!

In case of an accident or breakdown

  1. Make sure everyone is safe.
  2. Contact us as soon as possible.
  3. Take photos of the situation and any damage if it is safe to do so, and send them to us.
  4. Do not arrange roadside assistance, towing or repairs without contacting us first. Depending on the situation, costs may not be covered by the insurance if assistance is arranged without prior approval. We’ll help you find the best and fastest solution.

Your safety always comes first. If you can’t reach us and the situation is urgent, don’t hesitate to do what you believe is necessary. We can sort out the practical details afterwards. Many travel insurance policies also provide roadside assistance, so you may be covered through your own insurance as well.

These numbers are free to call and work even without a Norwegian SIM card.
